What to Look for in a Beginner Sewing Machine
When choosing your first sewing machine, keep this simple checklist in mind:
- Easy threading (because nobody has time for frustration)
- Built-in stitches – options for basic sewing and future projects
- Lightweight but sturdy – easy to move but won’t wobble while you sew
- Metal frame – for durability and long-term use
- Speed control – especially important for beginners and kids
My Top 3 Machines for Beginners
There are dozens of beginner sewing machines on the market, but I chose these three because they consistently perform well, are easy to learn on, and grow with you as your skills improve.
1. Janome for Beginners 234

This machine checks nearly everything on my list. It’s super easy to thread, has 15 built-in stitches (perfect for woven garments, quilts, and knits), and is lightweight with a sturdy metal frame. One standout feature is its front-loading bobbin. While most beginner machines use a drop-in bobbin, the front-load style feels closer to an industrial machine. Once you learn how to insert this type of bobbin, you’ll be comfortable using almost any sewing machine out there!
Cons: It doesn’t have speed control, but don’t let that stop you from considering it as you’ll quickly get the hang of mastering the foot pedal. There’s also no built-in thread cutter, so keep scissors nearby.
Bonus: It comes in fun colors! And if you book a class with me, you’ll get to try this machine out (in the crystal colorway) and sew on it before deciding to purchase your own. Book a session with me here!

2. Brother CS7000X

I may be biased, but my favorite will always be a Brother sewing machine. It’s the very first machine my dad bought me when I started sewing, and believe it or not—20 years later, I still have it and still use it. It got me all through college! To add, this machine was #1 on New York Time’s The Best Sewing Machine article. Click here to read it!
Why I love it:
- Speed control (amazing for beginners, espescially kids)
- Easy threading
- 70 built-in stitches for different projects
- Digital feature for stitch selection
- Affordable and sold at Amazon and Walmart
- Packed with features (basically the whole kitchen sink!)
- This is the newest version of my original Brother machine from 20+ years ago
Cons: Many in the sewing community say the newer Brother models don’t feel quite as solid as the older ones, however, for the price and for the features, I still recommend this one. Like the Janome machine, if you book a class with me, you’ll get to try this machine out and sew on it before deciding to purchase your own. Book a session with me here!

Bonus: If you plan on sewing projects with multiple fabric layers, denim or heavy-duty fabrics, I suggest the Brother Strong & Tough ST371HD. My client bought it, loved it, and I tested it too—thumbs up!

3. Singer Heavy Duty 4411

No sewing machine roundup would be complete without the Singer Heavy Duty 4411. I know sewists who are die-hard Singer fans, and if that’s you, this machine is for you!
Highlights include:
- Easy to use & thread
- Drop in bobbin (as opposed to front-loading)
- Heavy duty machine that can handle almost anything
- Sturdy (no wobbling while sewing)
- Model 4411 is the most cost-efficient
- Available in 2 other colorways
- Sold almost everywhere: Walmart, Michaels, Amazon and yes, even Costco!
Cons: It doesn’t have speed control and if you want more stitch options for future, you will need to upgrade to another model of the Heavy Duty series

Bonus: Kid-Friendly Sewing Machine

If you have a little one who’s curious about sewing, and you’re not ready to commit to a full-sized machine, this is a fun, affordable option for them. Perfect for ages 5+, this machine does the job!
While I’ve tested a few “kids’ machines” from Amazon and Aldi that didn’t work well—this one actually does! A client bought it for her daughter, and she’s been sewing doll accessories nonstop. Clothes are definitely next!

Getting to Know Your New Machine
When your new machine arrives, here’s my go-to routine that you can follow:
- Unbox and review all the pieces.
- Wind your bobbin and thread the machine.
- Grab two scraps of fabric and test out every stitch.
- Create a reference swatch with all stitch settings—this will be your future cheat sheet!

Where to Buy
Thanks to the rise of the slow fashion movement, sewing machines are now more available than ever. You’ll find them at Walmart, Amazon, Costco, now Michaels, and more.
- Pro tip: Visit a local sewing machine retailer if you can. You might discover a model with features you didn’t even know you needed—and you’ll often get to test it before buying.
- Save money: Don’t sleep on Facebook Marketplace! I’ve snagged two machines there for the price of one!
- Easy option: Order online at Amazon or visit your nearest Walmart, Costco and Michaels!
